Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
